1. Clean up your bedroom first

It is the first step towards an allergy proof dwelling. Remember that dirty mattress or blankets or pillows are the "house of dust mites". Severe dust mite allergies are mainly found in bedroom. It can provoke allergies as well as asthma. If you sleep on those mite infested mattresses or blankets, then maybe you have to face a dose of allergy.

If your bedroom is just beside of a busy roadside, then the chances of dust mite infestation in your room is highly increased. You need to change your bed sheet, pillow cover once in a week. Wash them in hot water [1].

If possible, place your mattress and pillows in sunlight for some times, it will help you a bit from mite infestation. Try to cover your mattress with plastic cover, it will reduce the problem and if mites are there then they are unable to contact your eyes, nose and mouth.

So, give some times to clean up the bedroom and enjoy a comfortable sleep without allergy.

2. Ditch the curtains or drapes

Curtains or drapes are a place of mold growth, as well as it can catch the dust mites or other allergens easily. Heavy curtains are a cozy place for dust mites. Try to use shades or blinds in place of curtains in this winter.

If you have to use the curtains then wash it frequently in the washing machine without contacting yourself with it [2]. By this process you can make your heavenly home allergy free.

3. Stop using carpets

Like curtains, carpets are another source of allergens. Carpets are very attractive and nice looking. Of course, it gives a classy look to your home, but, it can collect all the dust mites, pollens, fur from your pets and other allergens.

Your carpet can release those allergens in the air by your walking or your child’s playing over there [3]. By this way you may be a victim of allergy in this winter.

So, if you want to make a allergy proof home, then stop using it, just wooden or marble floor is enough, it can be easily cleaned and can’t accumulate those allergens for long time.

4. Use a strong vacuum cleaner

Those people who suffer badly from allergy; a vacuum cleaner is a magic for them. Yes, use a handy, powerful vacuum cleaner throughout the year, especially in this winter.

As I mentioned a strong vacuum cleaner, means not all the vacuum cleaner manage your problem. To remain absolute dust free, you need to buy a vacuum cleaner with HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filter; it can clear the dust particles of 0.3 micron or above [4].

So, invest in a high performance vacuum cleaner that not a single dust particle would be free, an allergy proof home is in your palm, but, don’t forget to wear a mask before using it.

5. Use two doormats

Always use two doormats, one for outer part of the house, and second one for the inner part of the house. Outer doormat can catch all the dust from your feet, and when you step in, the second mat can catch the remaining of dust from your feet, if any [5].

It can reduce the chance of contamination of your house from the outside dust. So, always use a second layer of protection to keep the allergy away from your home.

6. Clean the filters of your Air Conditioner

Air conditioners have an inbuilt dust filter. After a long time of use, a lot of dirt accumulates in that filter. After this, when you switch on the AC, the dust particles may be released in the air via the AC [6].

Many people have reported that they got allergy attack from their own AC that came from the unclean dust filter. So, clean the dust filter of your AC by yourself or from service center.

Contact your service provider or refer to the user manual of your product to know how frequently you should clean the dust filter of your AC.

7. Check water leakage to prevent any mold growth

Mold mainly can grow in the damp places like bathroom, kitchen, garden etc. It is a highly allergic substance and you should take proper care to stay safe from the mold infestation.

Keep your bathroom dry and clean as possible, check for any water leakage in the bathroom or kitchen, if any, make sure that they are repaired as early as possible. Keep an eye on the areas where standing water accumulates in the bathroom or under the kitchen sink.

India itself is a very humid country, in this humid condition, most of the time mold growth is unavoidable [6]. In that case you have to take special care of your house. You can use a dehumidifier to resist the mold growth.

By this process you can decrease the mold growth and you will be going one step further towards an allergy proof home.

8. Need a pet-free bedroom

A pet free bed room is most needed for those persons having allergy from pet. You can get allergy from pet-fur, pet dander, saliva or pee [8]. If your bed is a haven for your pet, then you might get some allergy. Bathing of your pets once or twice a week is recommended.

So, limit your pet in your bedroom, they should stay elsewhere. If you can’t limit it at all, then vacuum frequently to make your home allergy proof.
