Treatment of Sunburn: 7 Useful Home Remedies

Now a days, we are very concerned about sunburn, a skin condition due to overexposure in Sun, exhibiting redness, rashes, discoloration, itching and even blisters. Beside this, many persons get skin cancer too because of sunburn. Sunburn can also occur via UV exposure in laboratory rather than sun only.

So, it is better to prevent it from happening otherwise you have to face some awful consequences. You can refer my previous article for the knowledge about how to prevent getting a sunburn.

But, during this season, if anyhow somebody gets sunburn, then it is necessary to treat. There are several remedies including some medications and some home remedies, but, during the needy hours if we get some readymade solutions, it will be better.

So, this article is all about the remedies of sunburn which I think will be helpful for the person who need it the most.

Home remedies of sunburn

To treat sunburn, you should rely upon some useful home remedies which are very easily available to all of you. Fortunately, the household items have a greater impact to treat the sunburn easily.

So, here is a list of some useful domestic items to use for treating the sunburn.

1. Aloevera

Aloevera is a magical succulent plant you must have it in your house. From the ancient times it’s gel can heal so many different ailments like blood sugar, cholesterol, skin burn, ulcers, rheumatoid arthritis, dandruff, piles, diarrhea, inflammation of digestive system and many more [1].

In addition, aloevera gel can impactfully treat the sunburn too. If you have plant in your house, then cut a small amount of a leaf and extract the gel from it. Then apply the pure gel to all over your sun-burnt skin. It can easily soothe the sunburn.

Aloevera gel has 19 out of 20 known amino acids, it has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory properties. It can soften and hydrate your skin cells, produce collagen and protect the skin from overexposure to sunrays [2].

 So, apply it regularly to vanish the symptoms of sunburn easily at home. In the absence of a plant, you can use a 100% aloevera gel purchased from the nearest pharmacy.

2. Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is much useful to treat a bad sunburn. Take an apple cider vinegar bath to balance the skin’s pH level. Use 1 cup of apple cider vinegar to your bath, it can promote healing of your sunburned skin [3].

But vinegar have some controversies too regarding the healing capacity of it. Do not use raw, as it’s acidity may worsen the skin condition. So, if you have any previous treatment with vinegar on a smaller burn, then you can use it on your skin.

3. Baking soda

Baking soda is another helpful household item to treating sunburn. Make a generous amount of paste of baking soda with water and leave it for some times on skin to treat sunburned skin naturally.

If you have bathtub then, mix one cup of baking soda to tub water and soak your body for some times to get relief form the sunburn [4]. If your skin gets dry and peeling, then baking soda will be very much helpful to you.

4. Oats

Oatmeal is another useful item to treat sunburn. Oatmeal is very nutritious item and I think you all have it in your grocery. As you can prepare some delicious dishes with oats, now you can apply it to your skin also.

To treat sunburned skin, apply a generous amount of oatmeal and olive oil/coconut oil paste throughout the skin and leave as it is for some minutes [5]. After that take a cool shower. You will see the result soon.

5. Cool water

Cool water soothes your sunburned skin very well. It is known to give relief from the inflamed skin. Sunburn is mainly the inflammation of the skin.

So, take a cool bath or cool shower to cool down the affected areas of the skin [6]. But, don’t go to the pool, because it has chlorine in it that irritates skin.

When outside, if possible, give a splash of cool water in your face, neck and hand to get relief from the sunburn.

6. Coconut oil

Coconut oil is best for your skin, it gives us the best moisturization to our dry and damaged skin. So, to treat sunburn, you can use it in your face too.

Coconut oil has antibacterial properties also. Apply it on all over your face, it gives you proper hydration to the sunburned skin [7]. Apply it regularly, and you find very prompt response.

7. Cold milk

Cold milk has best healing properties for skin. It has soothing effect on dry, damaged, irritated skin. It’s lactic acid may help the peeling of sunburned skin [8].

Use a thin cloth or cotton ball and take some milk on it and dab it to your skin. Leave the milk on your skin and wash it after 30 minutes.

Some more tips to treat the sunburn

Here are some tips and tricks to treat the sunburn [9].

1. Drink plenty of water, at least eight glasses per day. It gives you hydration from within.

2. Take over-the-counter medicines. If problem worsen, talk to your doctor and take the medicine as prescribed.

3. Don’t poke the blisters, it will worsen the skin condition.

4. Wear loose cloth. Allow your skin to breath, it will help to heal the skin faster. Wear cloths made from natural fiber like cotton.

5. Do not pick the peeling skin, it can be infectious.

6. Apply moisturizer to all over the burned skin. It will hydrate the skin and help to get faster recovery. Use a perfume free moisturizer for sensitive skin.

7. Remove the excess sun exposure time, even stop the sun exposure for some days if you can.

ConScience

Sunburn is a very bad, irritated, inflamed skin condition. So, it is better to prevent getting it. But if you get sunburn then treat it as well.

We all need a good summer trip without the sunburned skin. So, prevent getting a sunburn or treat your sunburn with the above-mentioned easy ways to get a gorgeous, clear skin always.
